Every day 1,000,000 pints of Guinness are sold in the United Kingdom alone. It is one of the tippler's healthiest drinks as it contains malted barley, hops, yeast, and water. It is black because the barley is roasted like coffee beans.
Trial by jury is a fundamental right in British and North American justice. The idea that one should be judged by one's equals is central to the concept that we are all equal under the law. It's importance can not be overstated. Since 1225 juries have the duty, “to judge the justice of the law, and to hold all laws invalid, that are, in their opinion, unjust or oppressive, and all persons guiltless in violating, or resisting the execution of, such law.? That's important.
About 80% of my students don't know how to use a full-stop. A full-stop is the small black dot that you put at the end of a sentence. The North Americans call it a ‘period'.
Great Britain is England, Scotland and Wales. Do not confuse it with the United Kingdom. The UK is England, Wales, Scotland and 6 of the 9 counties of the Irish province of Ulster. The Northernmost part of Ireland is not in Northern Ireland but rather in Eire, or The Republic of Ireland – County Donegal to be precise.
Harald I (Danish Harald Blåtand) was the King of Denmark between 940 and 985 AD. He had an enthusiasm for eating blueberries. So much so, even his teeth were blue. They called him ‘Bluetooth'.
Every English man secretly wants to be James bond just as every English woman wants to be Princess Diana. Behind every hooligan and pale skinned English tourist is the gentleman-killer who always says the right thing at the right moment. Never underestimate an Englishman: he thinks he is Seán Connery (who, ironically, is Scottish as is James Bond!).
We live in the Information Age. The silicon chip has empowered us. Information is power. Everyone knows that. Data is the ultimate democrat. We are in control. We are protected. The Internet and mobile phones have set us free.
Supporting Real Madrid and Barcelona is all well and good. But it's not exotic, is it? Why don't you be a Port Vale fan too?
Got your attention? A headline has more impact if it is short and clear: today's readers are busy people who don't have time to assimilate or even bother attempting to take in a long string of words. Furthermore, a long headline somehow gives the impression that the writer just could not express concisely what he/she wanted to say - so the author tries to get all the information into the title.
In 1868 the All England Croquet Club was founded off Worple Road in the London neighbourhood of Wimbledon. Then, in 1875, Major Walter Clapton Wingfield introduced a game he had invented and named "Sphairistike" or "lawn tennis".

Weeklyletter.com is a weekly blog for students of English. We are a team of highly experienced teachers who publish a text with a specific theme - often about current affairs - every week. You can read the article and even listen to it: the teacher may have something to say that is not on the article!
If you're not sure about a word or expression - or you simply want to share your opinion - you can add a comment. The teachers regularly read the comments and reply to them. So it is very likely that you will receive help with your doubts - even, perhaps, from another student.
