Aside from the obvious controversy caused by the proposal, the mere mention of the idea of taxing email sent shivers up the spine of millions of European, American and global email users. Just the thought of having to pay for emails probably had human rights activists throughout the world scrambling to create a solid defense (or offense) to protect consumers.
But is taxing email such a bad idea? The idea is not new, but there has been much talk nowadays of some type of internet tax to regulate e-commerce or e-business in general. The reason is simple: since the cyber world belongs to exactly that – “the world, most authorities have decided to curl up in the corner with their mouths shut, failing to claim any authority to regulate such a thing.
If you think about it, the idea is not exactly “off the wall from a financial standpoint. Can you imagine the millions upon millions of euros that the EU would take in, in a matter of a week? For every email, even if they charged a fraction of a centimo, they would easily take in millions. On the Telefonica network alone there is an estimated daily volume of easily over 100 million emails/day. So why don’t “they charge the tax?
Part of the reason may be because they already do tax them. Every telephone or telecom operator charges taxes and in certain areas of the world, we already pay communications taxes on local, state and even national or federal levels. Surprised? Maybe not. It’s just the thought of charging “per emailâ€? that scares people, but in fact they already tax us for using the telecom network. Another consideration is whether or not the Union has the authority or power to raise money at all….for whom? Member states already tax consumers.
Where would companies like Google, Yahoo, Hotmail, etc…be if they decided to offer “pay-per-sendâ€? email services… my guess is bankrupt. AOL was one of the first major email service operators in the US and they started out charging for their email services. It was only later that other companies realizing that email uses telephone service decided to be more careful about charging consumers for fear that consumers would definitely revolt against them by boycotting their products.
So where does the issue stand right now? Lamassoure, embarassed by the tremendous pressure received from all sides after proposing his new “formula for financing the Union, has retracted the idea and denies ever even seriously considered this option.
In the end, maybe we need to be more creative when it comes to financing. How would you finance the European Union?
How about taxing politicians for press conferences?

I hate SMS messages with advertising and the invitation to “download” games that always seem to arrive at the most inopportune moment. Let’s get rid of them or at least tax the companies that send them and use that money to cheapen the price of information. At least have a button that says “if you do not wish to receive any more invitations or messages please press here.”
I agree with you, I hate to see an advertisement when I am sending or reading e-mails.
And I don’t think that to taxing e-mails could be a good idea. We already pay taxes to the network operator so if we had to pay for each e-mail that you send, we would pay twice. Wouldln’t we?
I don’t know how we can finance EU, but maybe we should seriously think if the big companies with their big profits shouldn’t do it.
Paloma
Thanks for your comment Paloma!
In response to your observation: let’s see if Microsoft would like to sponsor the EU… ha ha! Maybe not…but how about Roche, Eurodisney and IKEA? GREAT IDEA! Corporate sponsorship! .... let’s not forget Telefonica!
Hello Paul,
I don’t see how they are going to tax me for a service I am getting for free (email). I could understand (but never support) to tax the SMS or e-mail sent from a phone, because I have a contract with the TelCo.
Here is my idea: Let’s make the wealthy ones pay, for once.
Since a house is a basic need and we have a lot of speculation in Spain, I would raise hard taxes on second, third, fourth houses and so on….This way,if speculators don’t see a business on it anymore, they would stop accumulating houses, and all the young people and not so young could have access to a house at a reasonable price.
Regards,
Cristina
Excellent idea Cristina… let’s start with the presidents of ACS, Ferrovial, FCC Constructions, Proinsa, and the other Spanish magnates. We would not only be able to finance the EU, we would be able to finance Africa as well :)
Have a great day!
Hi Paul
I think I have had a brilliant idea about taxes.
... what about to decrease the salary of all the ruling class? what about to fine politicians every time they don’t go to the parlament or every time they were asleep on the parlament?
Do you thing it must be enough to pay all the emails on the world? I think so.
Do you remember the Beatles’ song… TAXMAN ????
Antonio
Well done, Cristina, I agree with you!!! I need a house!!!
I think in another idea to support the UE, what about solve all the corruptions issues?
There are a lot of people who do embezzlements and waste the money in stupid things and don’t share with the poorest. They could pay these taxes!
There are a lot people who take advantage of others!!!
Wealth aren’t good share.
Have a nice weekend!
Ah yes, Antonio the Taxman! Where would we be without the Revenue Service? Probably in heaven or at least halfway there. Every year all the politicians get together and fatten their salaries while we finance them, their families, and in most cases, the “tax exempt” businesses they are running on the side…unbelievable.
Taxes are necessary though…. it’s these taxes that have to do with financing something we never asked for … that’s where I have a real problem. I think Gema said it best, “Hey, I need a house!”.... While I must admit housing is cheaper in my own country, there is also an interesting fact that I would like to share with you: when you purchase goods on the internet in the United States, you normally do not pay any sales tax. Here in Europe, most internet-based companies charge VAT (value added tax). But not so in the US! Hopefully this practice will makes it way to Spain…but with the EU leaders looking for money, that certainly won’t happen – at least for now. How about “euro-nationalising” all the Venezuelan companies in Europe? Now there’s a great idea!
All I can remember about when I started using the Internet is that I had to call to my InternetCo through my TelCo.
I pay anually to my Internet provider company to get an Internet connection and to get an email-box. I don´t say two email-box, or three, ... I say one, because you must pay for each one. Obviously we have only one for each person.
With time the TelCo became my InternetCo too. And with time, all people can have a free email like hotmail, yahoo, etc.
Now we must pay taxes for each sms that we send.
I think the Internet is older than Phone. With time, we shouldn’t pay for each sms.
If “they” think that we must pay for each service, they are trying to invent the wheel.
I couldn’t agree with you more Javier! How about introducing the first free SMS service right here in Spain? I am sure if we got a few sponsors together we can certainly provide a free SMS service.
Anyway, there are only two things that are certain in life: death and taxes!
