The story of Teddy Geiger is truly a story of persistence, courage, and of course, living the American Dream. Growing up in Rochester, New York, Teddy had taught himself both the piano and guitar and by the age of 8 had already begun to write songs.
I don’t know if you have ever had the experience of visiting upstate New York, but Rochester is one of the most humble towns of the United States. No, it’s not a ghetto, but it certainly is no Manhattan. I must admit I was extremely surprised when I read Teddy’s biography. Even if you are not one of the hundreds of thousands of fans he has around the world, you have to sit back and see the amazing ability this young man has, to not only make a living and starting out his own business, but also encouraging young people and others like himself to do the same.
“You always want what you can’t have. But I have got to try!â€? sings Teddy. And if goalsetting and achieving objectives were virtues, Teddy would be right up there with Saint Joseph the worker. While still a teenager he entered into VH1’s contest entitled “In Search of a New Partridge Familyâ€?, which was a musical family sensation with their own TV show back in the 70s. As was to be expected, Teddy ended up as one of the finalists, but more importantly he dazzled one person in particular, Billy Mann. Billy Mann discovered such personalities as Sting, Jessica Simpson, Pink, etc.
For those of you who are not part of the music business, most musicians start out by writing or singing some songs which are normally not their own. They make recordings at a studio and send out “demos or tapes to music producers, hoping for their moment of glory. They sometimes get “gigs or chances to perform at local bars, etc.
Teddy was a teenager and as such, he was not able to go around doing gigs. So he stayed right where he was and played at schools and local gatherings as his popularity grew among teenagers, etc. And perhaps his greatest achievement, he stayed in school and continued studying… “Wandering the streets, and the world underneath it all. Nothing seems to be, nothing tastes as sweet, as what I can’t have.â€? ... He knew he couldn’t play in bars, but he continued on, despite the obstacles.
Teddy won $1000 grand prize in the Battle of the Bands in upstate New York, and to complement his success, he donated all of it to the Tsunami fund. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, he played and raised funds for the Red Cross Relief Fund.
After breaking his way into acting in “Love Monkeyâ€?, a recent teen sitcom, he was chosen by Levi’s to carry forward their Fall fashion line at the age of 17.
Perhaps his most famous hit, FOR YOU I WILL… was ranked #8 in the Billboard Top 200 and is presently number 24 of the famous “American Top 40â€? list. His debut album, Underage Thinking, was released in March 2006. The album was written entirely by Teddy Geiger.
If you are looking for more successful artists just check out the career of John Mayer and Dave Matthews. But for now, sit back and enjoy the lyrics written by this amazing teenager… who reminds us that we too have talent, we too have purpose in our lives.
“I am going to muster every ounce of confidence that I have, catapult into the water. I am going to muster every ounce of confidence I have. For you I will.

Dear friends,
The world need more people like Teddy Geiger.
I like your article Paul, and I would like to put emphasis on the phrase “You always want what you can’t have ….
I think it’s one of the best phrase I’ve read to define most people at the present time. If you have a beautiful and comfortable car, you’d like to have another better. If you have a small house, you’d like to have a big one. If you have a salary, you would like to earn more money, if you are working, you’d like to be on holidays, if today is Wednesday, you’d like it was Friday,…
Why don’t we know the way of being happy with the things that we have?
Why do we always want more than we have?
Be happy and “carpe diem!!
Thanks for your comment Ignacio!
You picked out one of my favourite lines of Geiger’s hit song – For You I Will . “You always want what you can’t have…” If we took only a few moments each day to “count our blessings” instead of complaining about what others do, say or have…we would be much happier people.
The song also talks about something that a lot of people do not like to hear about these days: “sacrifice.” “For You I Will” means that even though you feel like you can’t do something, you still make the sacrifice to do something for another person, out of love or friendship. I’m glad you enjoyed the article !
Interesting article! I had never heard about Teddy Geiger. How did you hear about him, Paul? He doesn’t come out in MTV Germany, and I’m quite sure about that because I admit that I watch this channel a lot.
The main TV channels and radio stations here always play the same music. It’s as if there were only 30 artists worth broadcasting. At this particular moment, for example, I cannot stand listening to Nelly Furtado’s “Maneater”, Shakira’s “Hips Don’t Lie” and Justin Timberlake’s “SexyBack” any longer. Couldn’t there be a bit more of a variety?
Great to hear from you Paola! Our German (and Philippine) audience is getting bigger and bigger by the day!
To tell you the truth, I would not have heard about him at all, if it were not for my daily “dose” of Launch Music Videos… He did a special live video in their studios and they posted it on their website.
I share your frustration with variety of music. You forgot Christina’s “Ain’t No Other Man”! and loser Paris I wanna-be-a pop-star Hilton… There is a unique function on Launch Music which records the videos you choose in a list and allows you to listen to the ones you like…they also offer new videos on a weekly basis. Check it out!
If not, start writing your own! Just like Teddy!
Here is his official site which may prove of some help: Teddy Geiger Music
Thanks again for your comments!
Hello everyone!
Good article!. He is an authentic teenagers’ model. Of course sometimes we want what we can’t have but …. free. I think the people needs ambition to progress, all the invents have been a result of work and overcoming.
Teddy Geiger believes in the sacrifice to obtain the objective and result; this is the important word. Even he didn´t forget that the music is not only the important and continued studying. He doesn’t put all the eggs in the same bag!.
Excellent observation Anonymous! Or should I call you “A” for short..je je!
You made a good point: he didn’t put all his eggs in one basket. That is sometimes the secret to success: diversifying risk. But of course, who can think of a better business than the business of identifying people’s emotions, putting that in writing, and singing to them about how you understand them! The business of making other people happy…the true road to happiness!
As Paola says, I’m surprised not to have heard about this guy, from what you say about him Paul in your article, though I readily admit that I’m not up on the music scene by any stretch of the imagination!
Ignacio (S?!) seems to have hit the nail on the head with what he says…while I also agree with what you say regarding “sacrifice” Paul. It’s not really a “hot topic”, one that you hear or read much about.
...Justin Timeberwho?!
Thanks Jeremy!!!!
I’ve noted a new expression in my English vocabulary: “to have hit the nail on the headâ€?
If you want to know more about Justin Timberlake, here you have his official web site.

Best regards!!
Congratulations Ignacio on learning yet another new expression!
While I can’t say the same about Justin Timberlake… ugh! Now there’s a boy who could use some English language instruction…ha ha! His mother would be “rolling in her grave” if she heard the filth coming out of his mouth..
I am still curious as to what type of music you and Jeremy listen to…
I like classical, some pop (mostly U2, Greenday, etc.) and even some hard rock like Switchfoot, Hawthorne Heights or Relient K.
I wanted to thank Jeremy for giving us his opinion about this young man..
I literally stumbled upon him as we say in Chicago. (heard about him by accident). I’m still amazed at the fact that he has not yet turned 18!
As far as “sacrifice” goes, I couldn’t agree with you more. It is not a hot topic…In fact, “no sacrifice” or “taking the easy way out” is certainly popular these days! When will we ever learn, if you want to make any headway in life, you have to feel the pain first! No pain, no gain!
Thanks again Jeremy!
