After travelling in Africa, Cormac Lynch returned to Ireland and set up the IT charity CAMARA, which asks businesses, and the public, to donate their old IT products for use in African schools.
So what does CAMARA do?
First they wipe the computer hard-drive. This ensures that any data on the computer is deleted and cannot be accessed by another person.
Then they install CAMARA programmes, including one that trains the user in basic PC skills, an HIV/AIDS e-learning application called ‘Respect’, and the Camara Wiki, a reduced version of the popular online Wikipedia.
Finally CAMARA sends volunteers to the African schools that have received computers to teach IT skills to their teachers.
“We are giving them a useful tool to help children and teachers in Africa make a better life for themselves, recycling potentially dangerous materials and offering green, financial and ethical benefits to businesses who donate their old IT products”.
That seems like good business sense to me!

What an interesting and useful Weekly Letter! Projects like these and the One Laptop Per Child Project are doing such important work.
I agree Dónal!! What I love about this organisation is that it combines helping people AND the environment – I couldn’t think of a better combination!
