The Joy of Overeating

Muffins, cookies and every other type of food you can order these days come super-sized, but new research indicates that the classic recipes we use at home are also provoking us to eat BIG.

Researchers from Cornell University studied eighteen recipes in “The Joy of Cooking”, one of America’s most published cookbooks. They found that, since the 1936 edition, fourteen of the eighteen recipes had significant increases in calories.

The total number of calories in the recipes increased by 35% from 1,922 to 2,489. Researchers say about 38% of this increase is because of more fattening ingredients and 62% is because of larger portions.

In the 1975 edition, one recipe made thirty brownies. The identical recipe in the 1997 edition made only sixteen brownies. Each brownie was almost twice as big.

The average dinner plate has increased in diameter roughly 40% since World War II. It seems logical that if plates are bigger, portions are bigger, too.

I like brownie a lot, although I try to eat more fruit and less sweets.
