We look for the advice of what the world considers to be “the experts.” Whether or not you are fans of theirs, they always have some intelligent views that make you think twice about the way you think. Here are just a few quotes that will enlighten your day and hopefully your business:
“If you think your teacher is tough, wait until you get a boss. He doesn’t have tenure…”
“In this business, by the time you realize you’re in trouble, it’s too late to save yourself. Unless you’re running scared all the time, you’re gone.”
“It’s fine to celebrate success but it is more important to heed the lessons of failure.”
“Success is a lousy teacher. It seduces smart people into thinking they can’t lose.”
Bill Gates, Founder of Microsoft Corporation
“If you pick the right people and give them the opportunity to spread their wings and put compensation as a carrier behind it you almost don’t have to manage them.”
“If you don’t have a competitive advantage, don’t compete.”
“Control your own destiny or someone else will.”
Jack Welch, Former CEO General Electric
“I will tell you how to become rich. Close the doors. Be fearful when others are greedy. Be greedy when others are fearful.”
“I don’t look to jump over 7-foot bars: I look around for 1-foot bars that I can step over.” “Wide diversification is only required when investors do not understand what they are doing.”
Warren Buffet, The Richest Man on Earth
“Everyone experiences tough times, it is a measure of your determination and dedication how you deal with them and how you can come through them.”
Lakshmi Mittal, Steel Magnate
And finally a quote from one of my close friends who happens to be a marketing genius:
“You can’t make an omelette without breaking eggs. But that doesn’t mean that every time you break eggs, you get an omelette”

It’s fascinating how business has embraced motivational quotes. I really do believe that having motivational posters around the workplace in discreet locations can alter the atmosphere and define the emotional and psychological mood of a company.

Years ago when I organised special events for Stockport Council we had in our office a poster that said
‘If the past is always shouting in our ears, how can we hear the first whisperings of the future?’
Here’s a motivational poster I made at http://bighugelabs.com/flickr/motivator.php
